Into The SilenceWe spent Saturday the 26th at a spiritual retreat center called Harvest Moon Gardens as part of the worldwide events associated with A Summer Feast for the Soul. Our host, Marsha Crites, had smartly chosen a shady area outside to set up and hold our gathering, amidst the blooming hydrangeas, day lilies and crimson spirea. A perfect day was ordered and delivered as we looked out upon rows of green mountains and far beyond. One of the readings Marsha had chosen to share with us that day came from a publication called, Friends of Silence whose headline asks the question. "Is there enough silence for the word to be heard?" Now, some of you may immediately think of the quote from I John, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God". But the word can mean anything: it can represent the eternal Om, the Sacred Name of God, the mantra that brings us closer to our own Divinity, anything at all. It can be the answer we are searching for, the dream that calls to our soul in whispers, or the original emanation that came forth in vibration from which all things were born. The question persisted in my mind as I rolled it around and around. "Is there enough silence for the word to be heard?" We spent the next few hours going deep into the silence. As we did, the walls that divide us came gently falling down amidst the soft summer breezes and trilling calls of the birds. The forest pulled away the veils that civilization places on our eyes, revealing the mysteries of the life-force present in all living things. The "I" of identity was lost, and in that space, an expansion could be felt into everything around us that brought connection and an awakening of the sensory self. The silence is calling to each one of us. It asks us to simplify, to quiet the monkey mind, to give the ego a rest. In doing so, we experience the greater essence that permeates all life, and animates our spiritual life. We become more in the silence, and in that more, the mundane ceases to be important. It is my hope you can find time this month to go deeper Into The Silence, and there, re-discover your Self.
